iwi
Iwi was originally an abstract term denoting a strong reinforcing structure. By the early 19th century it was analogous to the English notion of 'a people' or 'nation'. In more recent times it has taken on the sense of a socially and politically cohesive kin group or 'tribe'. Iwi has acquired these recent meanings partly due to its extensive use by government officials in the classification of kin groups for administrative purposes . TM
